The 2015 Australian Furniture Industry Awards (AFIA) were the highlight of the Furnishing Industry calendar once again. The awards acknowledge excellence, encourage innovation and design within the Industry and celebrate the success of the Australian furniture sector.

This year’s judges were the esteemed OAM Babette Hayes, Dr Brandon Gien, Chief Executive Officer of Good Design Australia, Cameron Baker, Deputy Chief Executive Officer of Manufacturing Skills Australia (MSA) and International Judge, Zilahi Imre, Vice President of the International Alliance of Furnishing Publications (IAFP).


Since the early beginnings of Australia as a nation, the Australian furniture industry has relied on its own ingenuity to create furniture that has evolved with the times and shaped the industry to what it is today – unique, high quality and innovative in design, construction and application.





Excellence in Lounge Furniture


This award is for excellence in lounge furniture (indoor or outdoor). Judging Criteria include design, ergonomics, and quality of materials, workmanship, durability, sustainability and value for money or marketability. Entries may include a complete lounge suite, or individual item. Great aesthetics and design in conjunction with innovation and originality will be rewarded with extra marks.

The judging criteria will include the design and aesthetics, ergonomics, quality of materials and finish, workmanship, durability, sustainability and value for money or marketability. Great aesthetics and design in conjunction with innovation and originality will be rewarded with extra marks.

Excellence in Occasional Furniture


This award recognises excellence in the design and manufacture of occasional furniture such as coffee tables, lamp tables, sofa tables, hall stands, audio visual entertainment units, etc. The criteria include innovation in design and functionality, quality of materials and finish, workmanship, durability, sustainability and value for money or marketability. Great aesthetics and design in conjunction with innovation and originality will be rewarded with extra marks.






Commendation: SP Furniture for Hi-Phi


Hi- Phi is an open ended, asymmetrical table whose proportions are based on the "Phi ratio". Inspiration began with the open ended form and geometry’s sacred phi ratio. These aspects were used to form a grid which small - section Marri sticks could be laid in a pattern which best utilises it's strength.

Commendation:Christopher Scott Furniture for The Hotham


The Hotham is a mid-century modern blackwood credenza constructed from solid blackwood and finished in a satin oil/wax with Blum touch open movement to runners + soft close hinges

The Hotham demonstrates an absolute attention to detail and workmanship. This is a durable, sustainable and poetic piece that has been designed and made for a lifetime f use and enjoyment.

This award is for any piece or suite of Bedroom furniture. Entries may include complete settings, or individual items. Supplier of the Year


The supplier of the year award recognises excellence in all aspects of customer service. It is open to suppliers of materials to Australian furniture manufacturers. Criteria include timeliness of deliveries, goods as ordered, quality and pricing of goods supplied, customer liaison and technical follow-up and support. Judging of this category will be assessed on the nominator’s submission together with referee checks.






The winner is Britton Timbers.

The retailer of the year award recognises a store, buying group or individual franchisee that has gone above and beyond to promote and encourage the purchase of Australian made furniture as the smart choice. The key judging criteria include product knowledge, store presentation, marketing activities and creativity, marketing effectiveness and achievements over a 12 month period. Judging of this category will be assessed on the nominator’s submission together with referee checks.






The Winner is CLU Living. 


CLU is an exciting lifestyle furniture and homewares brand that offers home furnishing solutions for compact living. CLU’s furniture works fabulously in small apartments and homes by incorporating multi-functionality and clever storage capabilities. CLU love design and continually source exciting new products locally and from around the world.






Furniture Industry Master


This award recognises an individual for their outstanding contribution to furniture manufacturing in Australia. The winner of this award is someone whose legacy has been to the benefit of the entire furniture manufacturing industry in this country – a pioneer, innovator, master craftsman or promoter of Australian furniture. The key judging criteria will be the significance of this individual’s contribution to the industry in terms of design, innovation, industry reputation domestically and/or overseas, or exploration and opening up of new markets etc.






The winner is Adam Fisher. 


Adam has over 27 years’ experience in the fixed seating commercial market, having commenced with Camatic Pty Ltd in July 1988. As a Mechanical Engineer with a passion for Product Design and Architecture, Adam quickly became involved in Product Development within Camatic and has since headed many of the Company’s design initiatives.






Best of the Best


The winners from each PRODUCT category automatically become finalists in the Best of the Best. The key criteria include the quality of materials used, quality of finish, selection of materials and their harmonious blend, is the piece aesthetically pleasing on the eye, with judges evaluating the artistic elements to achieve form, balance, proportion, the degree of difficulty / and the execution of crafts skills considering the environment/setting, functionality, durability and sustainability. Great design in conjunction with innovation and originality will be rewarded with extra marks.

Power to the people... This is the key message behind the Australian Furniture Industry People's Choice Award - That's right – the Australian Public decide who wins. This year all Nominated pieces featured at FURNITEX connect where visitors were able to vote for their favourites in each category culminating in tonight’s announcement of the People’s Choice for the best of the best in Australian made furniture.


This award represents a brilliant marketing opportunity for the winner as it reflects consumer demand for the product.
