While Amazon has been selling furniture for years, it has decided to tackle the sector more forcefully in America, which could then flow into Australia. The online retail giant is activating a major push into furniture and appliances, including building at least four massive warehouses focused on handling bulky items, according to sources familiar with Amazon’s plans.

“Furniture is one of the fastest-growing retail categories here at Amazon,” states Veenu Taneja, furniture general manager at Amazon. Taneja claims the company is expanding its selection of products, with offerings including Ashley Furniture sofas and Jonathan Adler home decor, and is adding custom furniture design services. Amazon is also speeding up delivery down to one or two days in some cities.

While there is no news as yet if Amazon will be selling furniture in Australia the AFA continues to encourage all Australians to buy furniture from Australian designers, manufacturers and retailers. This ensures that consumers can be more certain that the quality meet Australian standards and there is a reduced product safety risk. The AFA  will look to meet with Amazon representatives in Australia to ensure Australian product is represented in their offerings.
