Fifteen years ago, Tony Leask—Founder and CEO of Premium Surface Protection (PSP)—made a pivotal decision. While developing what would become some of the most technically advanced textile protection products on the market, he chose a path grounded not only in performance but in safety and sustainability.
Premium Surface Protection (PSP), based in Arundel, Queensland, delivers advanced textile protection solutions with a strong focus on sustainability. Its products are designed to extend the life of textiles, reduce maintenance, and support the circular economy by minimising waste and resource use.
From the outset, PSP’s mission has been to offer high-performing fabric protection that’s also earth, pet, and human-friendly – free from any harmful substances or chemicals of concern. This forward-thinking approach positioned PSP well ahead of today’s regulatory curve, ensuring its products are 100% free from PFAS, a now-banned group of “forever chemicals” under new Australian Government mandates.
But PSP’s commitment goes far beyond compliance. The company’s values are firmly rooted in creating:
· Healthy Spaces
· A Circular Economy
· Sustainable Partnerships
· Environmental Impact Reduction
Through the integration of these core principles, PSP not only extends the life and aesthetics of furniture and textiles but also contributes meaningfully to a more sustainable and responsible future for the furniture, interior design and construction industries. As highlighted in the AFA Architects and Specifiers Guide to Furniture—which Tony Leask contributed to—it’s now more important than ever to verify compliance with new standards, especially regarding PFAS and other harmful substances in textile coatings. Specifiers must demand proof of compliance, ideally verified by accredited authorities outlined in the guide.
PSP leads by example, offering products that meet and exceed these benchmarks:
✅ OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 Certified (Classes I-IV)
✅ bluesign® APPROVED
✅ ZDHC Gateway Level 3
✅ WoolSafe & CleanSeal Approved
✅ Free from all PFAS, APEOs, fluorocarbons, and other chemicals of concern
✅ Free from reactive and metal-based substances, catalysts, and cross-linkers

PSP is redefining fabric protection by pairing performance with environmental responsibility.
In a significant step toward environmental protection and public health, the Australian Government has introduced new regulations targeting PFAS (per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances).
From 1 July 2025, specific subsets of PFAS will be listed under Schedule 7 of the Industrial Chemicals Environmental Management Standard (IChEMS), prohibiting their manufacture, import, export, and intentional use in raw materials, chemical mixtures, or finished goods. While widely used for their durability, PFAS are highly persistent in the environment and human body, raising serious health and ecological concerns. The IChEMS framework, administered by the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (DCCEEW), aims to provide a nationally consistent approach to chemical regulation.
To support stakeholders, the National Retail Association has made a recording of its recent PFAS information session available to the public.

These new controls mark a major shift in Australia’s chemical management policies and reflect a national commitment to reducing the environmental and health risks associated with long-lasting industrial pollutants.
