As we start 2026, the ACCC’s Toppling Furniture Mandatory Information Standard remains in force (applicable from 4 May 2025) and continues to be a core compliance requirement for Australian furniture suppliers.

This Standard requires that suppliers of toppling furniture (including storage units, entertainment units, hall tables, sideboards, display cabinets and similar items over 686 mm high) provide:

  • Permanent warning labels on the product, not just on packaging
  • Clear safety information at point of sale (including online)
  • Anchoring guidance in instruction manuals and POS materials

A nationwide ACCC review found a high rate of non-compliance, especially around missing online warnings, labels only on packaging, and incomplete manuals. These remain common issues that can expose your business to enforcement action.

Best Practice Focus

While supplying anchoring kits is not yet mandated, the AFA anticipates this may become a requirement in future. We advise suppliers and manufacturers to consider:

  • How anchoring devices could be integrated or supplied with product
  • Updating design and instruction materials to support anchoring
  • Educating retail teams to communicate hazards and anchoring methods to customers

Key Actions for 2026

✔ Review all product labels, manuals and online listings for compliance
✔ Ensure permanent warnings are on the product itself
✔ Update online product pages so safety info is visible before “Add to Cart”
✔ Train sales staff on toppling risks and anchoring guidance

Toppling furniture risk is a serious safety issue – one that affects families and children across Australia. Meeting both the letter and spirit of the Standard protects consumers and your business.
