Bosses brace for record absentee rates

Employee absenteeism in Australia is already about 50 per cent higher than average, due to factors such as influenza and COVID-19. The number of workers taking sick leave is tipped to rise sharply over the next month, amid the continued spread of the BA.4 and BA.5 variants of Omicron.
There is also concern that waning immunity means that people who have had previous strains of COVID-19 are at risk of contracting these variants, while health experts have warned that reinfections may occur as early as 28 days after recovery from a previous infection.
