- The mandatory information standard for toppling furniture will apply to suppliers who manufacture, import, supply or sell furniture from 4 May 2025 to comply with the Mandatory Standard requirements
- Suppliers MUST attach permanent Warning Labels to toppling furniture covered by the Standard.

- The design of the labels, tags and POS materials must meet the Standard determined by the ACCC.
Meaning of toppling furniture
An item of furniture is toppling furniture if it is Category 1 furniture, Category 2 furniture or Category 3 furniture.
- Category 1 furniture means a storage unit, shelving or bookcase with a height of 686 mm or more.
- Category 2 furniture means an entertainment unit.
- Category 3 furniture means a hall table, display cabinet, sideboard or buffet, with a height of 686 mm or more.
- storage unit means an item of furniture that:
(a) is designed to be used primarily to store items; and
(b) contains one or more drawers, doors or other extendable elements.
To avoid any critical incidents, the Australian Furniture Association recommends labelling all categories of furniture that exceed 686mm regardless of the intended use. Consumers will often unintentionally use furniture in a manner not consistent with its intended use. Protect your business by providing all the necessary warnings, both mandatory and voluntary.
