As the United States enforces a minimum 10 per cent tariff on all Australian exports, the Australian Furniture Association (AFA) is calling on Australians to actively support local industries and choose Australia first by purchasing genuine Australian made products.
These new trade barriers present a serious challenge for Australia’s manufacturing sector. However, they also underscore the urgent need to protect and invest in our sovereign manufacturing capabilities and build long-term economic self-reliance.
The AFA welcomes the Federal Government’s response, which includes strengthening Australia’s anti-dumping regime and providing financial support for exporters seeking to access alternative markets. These measures, combined with the government’s commitment to a ‘Buy Aussie’ procurement policy, represent positive steps toward shielding local businesses from the pressures of a volatile global trade environment. The Government’s promises though must be activated by the Agencies responsible for the actual procurement of products and not use the loophole statement in the Commonwealth Procurement Rules which quote ‘or equivalent’.
Recent media highlighting poor procurement practices is evidence enough that things must change. https://australianfurniture.org.au/sustainable-government-procurement-of-furniture/

Another gross waste of taxpayer money is alleged when staff of the Department of Parliamentary Services to ‘manufacture’ furniture products, including desks, tables, and wall units were listed in a recent Senate estimates enquiry. Bing Videos
A coordinated, strategic approach to ‘buy local’ initiatives — involving consumers, businesses, and all levels of government — is now more important than ever. Prioritising Australian made goods in procurement decisions not only helps mitigate the impact of international tariffs but also has the potential to stimulate job creation and support economic growth.
With federal government contracts valued at approximately $100 billion in the last financial year, shifting focus toward local suppliers can deliver widespread, long-term benefits for the economy and for communities across Australia.
Australian manufacturers, including many within the furnishing sector, are renowned for their premium-quality products, manufactured to rigorous national standards. These goods consistently offer exceptional value throughout their lifecycle and remain the smart choice for both commercial and residential buyers.
